A native of Indiana, Steele was primarily known as a landscape artist with an interest in Impressionism and as a member of the Hoosier School of art. He married Mary E. Lakin in 1870 and moved to Indianapolis, working primarily as a portrait painter. From 1880 to 1885 he studied in Munich, and returned to Indianapolis with an interest in landscape painting. A native of Germany, Baumann was an artist in Brown County, Ind. from 1909 to 1915. In 1918 he moved to Taos, N.M. and then to Santa Fe. John Tinney McCutcheon (1870-1949) was a newspaper cartoonist and war correspondent. Born in Lafayette, Indiana, McCutcheon graduated from Purdue University in 1889. After graduation, McCutcheon got a job as a cartoonist for the Chicago Morning News (later the News-Record; Chicago Record; Record-Herald).
